Tom Skerritt has taken a night post counting sheep for a sleep clinic beside a Melbourne community garden. He stands at the fence in aviator sunglasses and addresses each sheep as a pilot. The clinic reports that patients fall asleep by about sheep forty.
Skerritt is booked for a season of counting from the first Monday of spring, with a run of 8 nights per fortnight. A limited number of double-shift evenings are pencilled in for the long weekend. Sheep numbers are expected to rise to 300 per night.
At present he is trying to count in plain numbers, but each sheep still gets a call sign and a calm sentence about the weather ahead. Counting is going well, though sheep 212 keeps landing twice. The patients are asleep, but the flock is wide awake and wants a debrief.
Please keep the garden gate closed and your sheep in single file.
