He has taken a post as lock keeper on a quiet canal beside an underpass in Rotterdam, working a windlass and a flask each morning. Barges now pass through at a steady rate, and each is greeted with a short, ominous remark about the water level.
His statement reached us via a passing heron, who stood on the beam and dictated it slowly. It reads: 'The job is fine. I only asked for a quiet lock. Nobody mentioned that a lock is basically a basement full of water.'
Pieter, who delivers bread by bicycle, said: 'Every morning there is a red balloon bobbing in the lock chamber, and he just nods at it and carries on. Yesterday the lock gate creaked and a rowing boat called Christine arrived without anybody in it.'
Do not follow the red balloon into the lock; ask the keeper first.
