Tom Hanks now lives in a model village outside Rotterdam, at scale, in a cottage with a working chimney and no door handles. He arrived at 1:76 height on a damp Monday and has since taken a bench near the miniature underpass. Staff say he is polite, warm and slightly concerned about the tide table.
His habit of finding a kindly stranger to sit beside has carried over. He now shares the bench with a painted volleyball named Wilson, whom he has promoted to deputy station master. Each hour he offers passing miniature commuters a chocolate from a box the size of a stamp, saying life is like one.
Monday, 9:10: arrives, sits down on the bench. Tuesday, 7:45: opens the station and announces a problem to the signal box. Wednesday, 2:30: tries a typewriter the size of a sugar cube. Friday, 11:00: finishes a letter. Saturday, 4:15: model train leaves on time, and he waves it off.
Please watch your step near the underpass and do not feed the volleyball.
