His close control has seeped into the carpet of a motorway services near Knutsford, where the swirls now form tight triangles. Walkers on the pattern find themselves turning smartly on the half-turn. Phil is fine and is working his way back out along the weave.
He intends to leave the carpet by the arcade end in stages. A first run to the coffee kiosk is pencilled in for Friday, with a second sweep past the toilets the following Wednesday. The final dribble to the car park door is pencilled in for the bank holiday.
Cleaners have reported three things: a diagonal stripe that nudges trolleys round a bin, a bleached blond tuft of fluff by the fruit machine, and a pocket of space so small that a dropped crisp refuses to enter it.
Walk the carpet in straight lines and do not attempt to nutmeg the pattern.
