The singer joined a skein of pink-footed geese above North Shields on a grey Wednesday and has flown with them since. He is roughly halfway to Norway, honking in tune and keeping the formation tidy. A lighthouse keeper at Tynemouth reports the V now has a noticeably better chorus.
Bread has been thrown from the pier at Tynemouth, and a saxophonist was sent up in a hired microlight to play 'Seventeen Going Under' as a recall. The geese joined in on the chorus and flew on faster. The microlight has since been asked to stop.
The flock is due to land in a Norwegian fjord on the 14th, rest for nine days, and head back in October. A sold-out singalong on the shoreline is expected, with ticket-holders asked to bring wellies and no loaves. The return leg will follow the same line, only louder.
Look up at dusk, keep bread indoors and do not request the sax solo.
