"I will be calling the numbers again tomorrow, and the day after that," says a laminated raffle ticket

He took the bingo caller's job at a school sports hall in Auckland after the previous caller retired to his allotment. Since then every session has been the same Thursday, and he is calling it with the patience of a man who has done so before. Doors open at 6.30pm, the tea urn is always lukewarm.
His deadpan delivery has transformed the numbers: 'Two fat ladies' is now followed by a long, level look at the nearest pensioner. He has also started waking at 6am to the same radio song, and now calls 'Legs eleven' before the ball drops. Each repeat he refines his patter slightly.
"I've been selling raffle tickets in that hall for nine years," says Denise, a dinner lady. "Same Thursday, but he's got better every time. Last week he whispered 'on its own, number seven' and I'm fairly sure the ghost in the stage curtain clapped."
Bring your own pen, and do not shout house before he says to.
