Jack Dee is now a crossword clue, printed in a puzzle that nobody in Bangkok can finish. The grid is pinned to the side of a street food stall on Soi 38, where the vendor, Somchai, has stopped asking for help. Mr Dee is fine and describes the arrangement as 'a bit much'.
His famous deadpan is keeping the clue unsolved: every solver who reads it sighs, puts the pencil down and says 'Oh, never mind'. He still refuses to be cheered up by the correct letters, and pours a lukewarm lager over any fill-in that looks pleased with itself. A grudging 'Hello, nice to see you' appears in the margin at noon.
Monday, 9am: clue appears at 6 Across. Tuesday, 1pm: a tourist named Linda writes 'Hmm' in the squares and leaves. Thursday, 11:40am: Somchai's cat solves two letters and is ignored. Friday, 4pm: the clue reads 'not impressed' in four languages. Saturday, 3am: nothing, which he calls 'about right'.
Do not offer cheerful answers; he will only sigh and wait for the next solver.
