Cynthia Erivo has taken a post as understudy to the speaking clock, covering the hours when the lead is unavailable. Unfortunately, each announcement of 'at the third stroke' swells into a full key change. Callers asking for 7:15 now receive 'Defying Gravity' in a 7:15 arrangement.
Engineers have tried lowering the volume, fitting a metronome and asking her politely to stay on the minute. She complies for nine seconds, then lifts the word 'precisely' by an octave and the exchange rattles. A cardigan has been placed over the microphone, but she sings through it.
Camden Council has logged 212 complaints, mostly from people late for trains because the minute was held for forty seconds. It has also received 340 compliments, including one from a man who says his boiled egg has never been so well timed. A resident of Gordon Street asks that the 3 a.m. slot be sung quietly.
Please check your watch, then stay on the line for the key change.
