His own echoes now outnumber him seven to one; refuses to acknowledge the first four.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has taken residency in the basement acoustics chamber of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he has been systematically documenting every echo produced by the building since Tuesday last. The chamber is lined with mirrors and recording equipment of his own making. He catalogs each reverberation by interval, duration, and emotional pitch before filing it.

"I come down every morning to make sure nothing's escaped," said Margaret Henshaw, the cleaner, 67, who mops around his workstation. "He hums the intervals back to them, you see, checking they match. Last Thursday he was very cross with the soprano echo from 1983—said it had drifted a quarter-tone north."

The Royal Opera House received four complaints from patrons about low-frequency humming during performances of Evita, and two compliments regarding unexplained orchestral depth in the auditorium. A third letter, signed only as "an interested party," requested sheet music for the echoes themselves, saying they had become "more reliable than the live orchestra."

Guidance for the public

Do not hum at the echoes; he finds it encouraging and they become harder to track.
