- Has trained himself to project his voice so powerfully from within the phone box that the entire departure lounge at Keflavik can hear his interpretation notes.
Robbie Coltrane has relocated his entire professional operation into a disused telephone box positioned on a gravel verge outside Keflavik International Airport. The booth, which measures four feet by three, contains a single chair, a narrow desk, and approximately six hundred pages of marked-up scripts arranged in careful stacks. He arrived there in March and shows no signs of leaving.
"He was on the telephone to someone in Dublin when I came past on the Tuesday," said Henrik Jóhansson, the airport's senior facilities manager. "Doing voices. Doing the lot. The phone box was actually vibrating slightly. I thought it might be a fault, but he told me to bugger off, very polite about it, so I did."
He is currently working through the collected works of Shakespeare, one play per week, delivering each performance to a rotating roster of acting students who book telephone slots through an email address he has written on cardboard and taped to the booth's exterior. He is on week nine. The weather in Iceland is making this very difficult.
Do not telephone the booth after midnight. Neighbours are beginning to complain.
