TIDAL BUT PRESENT

Dempsey steadies lighthouse beam as sutures keep interfering with rotation

Existence confidence provisional
A generated photo of an anonymous stranger. It is not the person named.
Dempsey stands at the Brighton sea wall railing in drizzle, holding a suture kit at arm's length like a surgical instrument, studying it with intense focus as waves grey the promenade behind him.
Location
A decommissioned lighthouse tower three miles north of the Bountiful Harvest farm stand near Barnard, Vermont, in a field belonging to nobody in particular.
Currently
Night keeper of a Vermont lighthouse. The beam keeps tangling with operating theatre lights.
Last confirmed sighting
Tuesday evening, adjusting the lens with surgical tweezers, still in scrubs.
Observations
Can perform emergency appendectomies on visiting seagulls using only the beam's reflection and a scalpel he keeps in the lamp room.

Patrick Dempsey accepted the keeper position in late September, drawn by the structural elegance and the promise of quiet nights. The Vermont light operates on a seven-night cycle, but the lens has begun refracting surgical imagery—sutures, retractors, that particular shade of OR overhead light—into the beam itself. Passing ships report seeing what they describe as extremely confident navigation advice printed briefly across the water.

Specialists at the Trinity House authority remain divided on the mechanism. Some argue the lighthouse is absorbing his professional preoccupations; others suggest the beam is behaving with unusual clinical precision, almost as if trained. A naval architect from Burlington insists the sutures are structural, not metaphorical, which settles nothing.

The 2024-25 season runs November through April, with particular intensity during winter storm months when the beam's accuracy appears to spike. Dempsey has pencilled in a December rotation-adjustment and a January lens recalibration. He has requested February entirely off, citing "narrative necessity," though lighthouse records show no provisions for this.

Guidance for the public

Do not approach the lighthouse beam directly. It may attempt to assist you.
