Patrick Dempsey now lives in a converted phone box beside a coin car wash in Nevada. The flat measures one metre by one metre, with a fold-down bed, a kettle and a hook for his scrub cap. He still starts every morning by announcing it is going to be a good day.
Residents have reported a stethoscope hanging from the old coin return, a racing helmet used as a fruit bowl, and a laminated sign asking passing motorists to describe their symptoms through the glass.
Estate agents have offered a larger box two doors along, but he cannot fit the racing seat through the door. A bigger flat was also tried, but the kettle then boiled too far from the bed and he returned.
Do not knock on the glass unless you are describing symptoms or a lap time.
