James Michael Nail, latterly resident in Newcastle switchboard infrastructure, materialised within the council helpline's hold music loop at 9.14am on a Tuesday. His distinctive tenor, recorded for a charity album in 1996, has since become the permanent audio greeting. Attempts to extract him have so far redistributed him further into the system's deeper branches.
Extraction is scheduled across four phases, commencing week of 14 January. Phase one addresses the main menu loop; phase two targets subsidiary branches; phase three involves the planning department's extended queue; final phase, estimated completion 12 February, concerns the after-hours recorded message. Each phase requires the helpline to route calls through the depot's external speaker.
The council has received forty-seven compliments on voice quality and seventeen complaints about the frequent lyrical repetition. Three callers report improved mood during hold times; two report inability to recall their original query. One complaint alleges humming during silences constitutes false hope of immediate connection.
