James Acaster took a job as night porter at the Hotel Encanto in Mexico City on September 15th. Within four hours, guests began complaining that key handovers, wake-up calls and lost-luggage reports were being delivered as ten-to-fifteen-minute narratives with full emotional context. By the second night, the manager had given up trying to stop him.
Guests frequently ask: does he know he's doing this? Yes. Can he hand over a room key without backstory? He has not yet managed it. Why does he gesture so much in the dark lobby? He says the architecture demands it. Will he ever just say the WiFi password? Sources suggest he tried once; it took seventeen minutes and involved his childhood.
Monday 11 p.m.: checked in a couple, took forty-two minutes, they missed dinner. Wednesday 1 a.m.: fixed a shower in 312, spent ninety minutes explaining the shower's history and his relationship to showers generally. Thursday 3:15 a.m.: a guest asked for directions to the Metro; he provided a seven-part oral map with character voices. Friday dawn: still in the lobby, still talking, management asleep in the back office.
If you require only the key, contact the day staff. He cannot help it.
