Graham Norton has taken a job as toll booth attendant on a small private bridge outside Bray. Every driver is now invited to pull in, sit on a red sofa on the verge and tell their best story before the barrier lifts. The fee remains £1.20.
"I only stopped to pay," said Donna, who delivers bread rolls to three garden centres. "Next thing I'd told him about my uncle's caravan and he was howling, and there was a button on the arm of the sofa. I didn't press it. The man behind me did."
He is currently trying to clear a tailback of forty-one vehicles by chatting to each at speed, with mixed results. A camper van has been on the sofa since lunchtime, and the barrier has been raised for a story about a ferret.
Have exact change and one decent anecdote ready; do not press the button on the sofa.
