Andrea Corr has taken a job driving a mobile library around the Zurich commuter belt, replacing an earlier notice that said she was merely browsing. The van holds four thousand paperbacks and one tin whistle, which she plays at red lights. Borrowers now queue by the rear door for the whistle rather than the books.
"I sell pretzels by platform 7 and I've heard it all," said Ruedi, a pretzel vendor. "She pulled up, the doors hissed open, and somebody asked for a cookery book. She sang 'Breathless' instead and the whole queue missed the 8:14."
The library authority asked her to keep the whistle in the glovebox, and she did, until the van started humming 'Dreams' by itself. A sign reading Quiet Please was then fitted to the roof. Passengers took it as a request for a chorus, and the van now reaches the depot an hour late.
Return books on time and do not request a song from the driver.
