Sylvester Stallone has been operational as head bell ringer at St Augustine's Cathedral since 14 November. His official duties are straightforward: ring the bells for matins, evensong and special services. However, his working method remains problematic.
Monday 18th at 06:47, the dawn bell pull caused unexplained reverb throughout the nave. By Wednesday 20th at 14:15, a single rope had been pulled 88 times in succession. Thursday evening's compline was rescheduled twice—at 19:30 due to heavy breathing from the bell chamber, and at 21:10 due to Stallone insisting on rewinding the ropes and starting again.
Stallone released a statement through the Cathedral's head verger on Friday morning: 'I'll be back. To ring them again. Yo, Adrian—I mean, the bells hear me now.' He has requested the bell chamber be soundproofed and has already submitted architectural notes suggesting adding a second rope system for 'proper motivation sequences'.
Avoid the cathedral during bell-ringing hours. Earplugs are insufficient.
