Richard E. Grant exists only when nobody is looking directly at him. When observed head-on, he enters a state of deliberate absence, though his monologues continue uninterrupted in the peripheral spaces. Those who catch sight of him sideways report a man of unusual intensity, still smoking, still gesturing with theatrical precision at things nobody else can see.
He is currently working his way through the complete works of Shakespeare, performing each role alone in an industrial storage facility near the Greymouth waterfront. By all accounts, he is thriving. A local cleaner who never looks directly suggests the production quality is excellent, though the language grows increasingly baroque around Tuesday afternoons.
"I see him sometimes when I'm stocking shelves," says Joanne, a part-time supermarket assistant in nearby Hokitika. "I never look straight at him. He was doing Iago last Thursday, really doing it, proper voice work and that. Once I turned round, and there was just a cardigan hanging on a hook."
Do not attempt direct eye contact. Peripheral observation recommended. Avoid mirrors in his vicinity.
