Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen now exists exclusively within a converted garden shed positioned behind SM City Manila's loading bay, between the parking structure and the service entrance. The shed contains meticulously organized material samples, mood boards and photographic documentation of his work spanning four decades. Entry is by appointment through a single wooden door, which he has repainted seventeen times.
Experts remain divided on whether the shed's 3.2 by 2.4 metre dimensions constitute adequate exhibition space or represent a catastrophic downsizing of his practice. The curator of domestic theatre argues it is a perfect summation; the colour theorist insists the lighting is unforgivable and the entire structure demands resurfacing.
"He was recounting the history of a particular shade of taupe when I arrived at half past two," reports Denise, the loading bay security officer. "He hadn't finished when I left at four. The shed smelled very strongly of new paint, which he seemed quite cross about."
Do not approach the shed without a prepared colour palette reference.
