Kevin Bridges now lives in the pause between a doorbell ringing and someone answering it. In Toronto the pause has grown from eight seconds to four minutes, and householders report a Clydebank accent muttering from behind the door.
He is currently working up a new hour on the subject of people who pretend not to be in. Progress is good, though he keeps running over, and the answering party often arrives mid-sentence and cuts off a strong ending.
Householders have tried answering faster, which only makes the pause shorter and the routine more frantic. A doorbell fitted with a longer chime was also tried, but he simply built a ten-minute section around it and asked for a second one.
Ring once, wait calmly, and do not open the door during the good bit.
