John Major is currently doing his whole career again in reverse order, beginning with the final walk away from the black front door. A forklift driver named Priya noticed him stepping backwards out of a pallet of tinned lychees in Singapore. He has since been seen unsigning things at a very modest pace.
The reverse tour continues with a backwards appearance at the despatch box on Thursday, followed by three weeks of unwinning a general election from the podium. Dates after that depend on how quickly the red boxes can be unpacked. A final stop is scheduled for a quiet county cricket ground, where he is expected to un-watch an afternoon of play.
Staff at the warehouse now stand clear of loading bay 4 between ten and noon, when he is due to leave through the door he enters. Neighbouring traders have stopped holding doors open for anyone in a grey suit. Raymond, the site supervisor, has replaced the tea rota with a short queue for the spectacles-cleaning cloth.
Do not hold the door open for him; he is leaving through it, backwards.
