James Watt Science

MECHANICALLY PREOCCUPIED

No cause for alarm: the valve problem remains manageable from the office.

James Watt checks a tyre at a cul-de-sac in Auckland as rain begins to fall, holding a small brass gauge at arm's length like a precision instrument he has just perfected.
Location
Between Junction 7 and the Smethwick service station, where the boiler shed stands.

Last confirmed sighting
Thursday afternoon, oiling a bewildering arrangement of copper pipes behind the hand-dryer.
Observations
Has catalogued forty-two different types of steam leak, each with its own sketch and filing reference number.

James Watt has taken a position as motorway services cleaner effective immediately, stationed at the facilities between Junctions 6 and 8 near Smethwick. His responsibilities include general maintenance, but a series of circumstances involving the boiler system has proven less straightforward than anticipated.

Residents of the service station have reported an unusual hum beneath the café area, which has grown steadily louder over three weeks. Staff on the late shift now arrive thirty minutes early to allow time for Watt to complete his current analysis of the heating distribution network, which now occupies much of the storage room.

Watt's approach to the boiler system has evolved from simple cleaning into a methodical investigation of its thermodynamic efficiency. He has fitted a series of small copper tubes around the main pipe to measure temperature loss, documented seventeen adjustments to valve positioning, and designed a separate chamber to condense waste heat before it exits through the roof.

Guidance for the public

Members of the public should not attempt to adjust any valve or pipe system without written clearance from the regional office.
