Bryan Cranston has been living in the lost property office at a railway station since a Thursday in March, between a box of single gloves and a cello. He keeps regular hours, wears a hat from the hat shelf, and has labelled his own shelf in neat capitals. Staff were told he would be collected, but no one has come.
Inventory: one green boiler suit, folded, on a hook that was not there on Monday; a whiteboard covered in the periodic table, found behind the umbrellas; and a faint smell of a very clean laboratory drifting from the lost keys tray.
Commuters now knock three times on the hatch before asking about their scarves, and wait to be answered. The launderette across the road has reported a rise in customers asking for their whites to be done properly. Lost property returns have improved by a fifth, mostly out of nervousness.
Knock three times at the hatch and do not ask him to say his name.
