Ben Affleck has taken a position as a bell ringer at a hillside cathedral near Boston, where he is rostered for the 8 a.m. peal and the Thursday practice. The bells now ring in the cadence of a man saying he's going to be fine, and the tower has started to lean slightly towards Dunkin'.
"I sell candles in the gift shop, and every time he pulls the rope there's a low rumbling, like a very large man being very quietly sincere," said Sheila, 54. "Last Sunday the bells went off and the whole nave went for a walk in a dark cape. Nobody could say why."
He is currently learning the full eight-bell method, but bell 3 keeps being drilled into the floor like an asteroid. Progress is slow: he has rung one complete peal, and then wrote a short, restrained film about it, which the bells have since declined to appear in.
Do not follow the bells. Cover your ears if a cape is heard.
