Tilda Swinton has taken a job as attendant at the car park behind a Yorkshire village hall, working a glass booth with a hatch. Within a week every driver arriving had begun to behave as though cast. Three motorists have asked her what her character's motivation is.
The hall committee tried swapping her pale booth for a plain hut, then a brighter lamp, then a laminated rota. None worked, because the booth reappears as a gallery vitrine each night and the rota becomes a mood. A Suspiria-style double of her now covers the Thursday shift, which has made the queue worse.
"I deliver the bread rolls to the hall kitchen," said Dennis, a baker's van driver. "She stared at my windscreen for a full minute and I felt I'd been in an orchestral piece. She wrote me a ticket. It was beautiful and it was thirty pounds."
Park between the lines, avoid eye contact with the vitrine, and keep your ticket.
