He now drives a mobile library on a Tuesday and Thursday loop of six villages. The van has a crooked handbrake and an unusually mellow passenger seat, which he describes as 'a bit of a rock'. Borrowers say he stamps each book with a small, sorrowful nod.
"I run the Thursday stop at the allotments," said Janet, a lollipop lady. "He handed me a poetry book and said, in a very soft voice, 'This one is majestical.' Then he reversed into a hedge and apologised to it for ten minutes."
Late fees in the district have dropped to nothing, as nobody wants to disappoint him. Children now return books with their own short rhyming reviews, and the allotment society has formed a quiet queue beside the van. Local hedges have been told they are doing very well.
Return books on time and speak to any hedges kindly.
