Ricky Gervais has taken a job as pitch marshal at a car boot sale beside a closed boardwalk arcade. He wears a hi-vis tabard and carries a clipboard, and he has begun every morning by strumming an acoustic guitar to the arriving stallholders. Sellers say they came for the bric-a-brac and stayed for the pained smile.
On Monday at 6am he assigned twelve pitches and did a David Brent speech about teamwork at 6.15. On Wednesday at 9am he laughed at a lamp for four minutes. By Friday at 7am he had given a talk titled 'Why I'm Basically a Friend to Every Bargain Hunter' and, at 11am, a man who sells VHS tapes asked him to leave.
The organisers moved his table behind the ice cream van, which only made the cackle carry further. They gave him a whistle, but he used it as a prop in a bit about whistles. A laminated sign reading 'Please No Banter' was also fitted, and he read it aloud to every customer in a pained voice.
Do not ask him a question unless you have forty minutes and a tolerance for guitar.
