The Duke of York has taken a post as gallery attendant at a small regional museum, where he is issued a lanyard and a torch. Within a week ten thousand men had begun reporting to him each morning at the foot of the main staircase. He marches them up, then back down, and logs both trips.
"I asked him politely to keep off the rope," said Brenda, who runs the car park outside. "He said they were neither up nor down, which I think was a fair point. Then the whole lot went past my barrier in single file and not one of them paid."
Experts disagree on whether the men count as visitors or as an exhibit. One school holds that the staircase is now officially a hill. Another insists the hill is still a staircase, and that the men are only being polite about it.
Keep to the left of the staircase and do not ask which way is up.
