The speaking clock now keeps possession. Every announcement is built up patiently from the back, with the time passed between at least eleven short syllables before anyone is allowed to say the hour. Pep is fine and is working from a food court in Manila.
He is trying to get his style back by standing beside the pips and nudging them into better shape. So far he has persuaded the clock to play a short 'at the third stroke' sequence, but the minutes remain stubbornly attached to the midfield.
His habit of drawing diagrams has moved onto napkins, tray liners and the steam from a soup bowl. He positions condiment sachets as a back four, shouts 'the third man' at the chopsticks, and rearranges the clock's seconds into a narrow diamond whenever it is nearly noon.
Do not ring the speaking clock before noon; let the pips build up in their own time.
