Olivia Colman has taken a job as a traffic census taker on a quiet Sydney road, armed with a deckchair, a clicker and a flask. She counts each passing vehicle, then tears up slightly and gives it a small wave. The count currently stands at 212 cars, 9 bikes and one very confused ice-cream van.
Residents on the road now slow down to be counted and often stop for a chat. Neighbour Gwen has started bringing out biscuits, and several drivers have been seen doing laps of the block to be told they are lovely. The council says average speeds are at an all-time low, mostly due to feelings.
Monday, 7.15am: first car counted, apology offered. Tuesday, 11.40am: a Queen Anne voice is used on a cyclist, who bows. Thursday, 3.05pm: a bus is counted three times because it looked tired. Saturday, 9.00am: the clicker is held up as an acceptance speech, and nobody can stop her.
Please wave at the census taker, and expect to be told you are doing really well.
