She now holds the keys to the Maryborough Bowls Hall, where she opens up at 6.40am and locks up after the Thursday raffle. Every lost-property box, however it begins, ends up as a drawer of liquid lipsticks in nude shades. Nobody has ordered them.

"I do the bins and the gutters, and I've never seen a mop do that," said Denise, who drives the mobile library van. "Last Tuesday the tea urn sold out in four minutes. There was a queue round the pavilion, and the urn was only warm."

She is currently fitting a liner pencil to every light switch, so the hall can be matched to the evening. Progress is slow, as the cupboard keeps launching new shades before the old ones have been counted. The committee has asked for one fire exit to stay uncontoured.
