Keir Starmer
Shoppers advised not to say 'unexpected item' aloud near Rotterdam self-checkouts, as it may be answered at length
- Location
- Self-checkout bank four, a supermarket beside an underpass in Rotterdam
- Currently
- Delivering measured statements from the bagging area, on request
- Last confirmed sighting
- Behind the bagging area, 14:20, rehearsing a pause
- Observations
- Once paused so carefully that a baguette went stale in sympathy across three postcodes.
The careful, measured delivery Keir Starmer is known for has leaked into all six self-checkouts at one supermarket beside a Rotterdam underpass. Each machine now pauses for eleven seconds before saying 'let me be clear' and then asks for an approved item in the bagging area. He is attempting to retrieve it from checkout four.
A staff member scanned a lectern, a red box and a black door to coax the delivery back, but the machines only added them to the bill. Mr Starmer has stood at the till and spoken slowly, which the checkouts took as a training sample and became more thorough.
The council has received 212 complaints about the delays and 40 compliments on the clarity of the receipts. One resident, Annelies, wrote to say her shopping has never felt so thoroughly scrutinised, and asked for the pause to be kept on the weekend rota.
Do not say 'unexpected item'. Bag your own shopping and wait for the pause to end.
