Julia Louis-Dreyfus has taken a post as town crier at a busy taxi rank in Johannesburg, with a bell, a tricorn hat and a laminated rota. Every announcement ends with her shouting 'Get out!' and pushing the air in front of her with both palms. Passing commuters now step back before the news arrives.
'I sell airtime from the stall next to her,' said Thandiwe, 38. 'She cried that the 4:15 was delayed and a man said 'Really?' and she shoved him, very gently, into the right queue. Now everybody says 'Really?' on purpose, and she has had to start doing the dance to calm them down.'
Monday 06:00: Shouts the weather, which leaves. Wednesday 11:30: Announces a lost umbrella with a short, furious flourish. Thursday 16:45: Dances for four minutes, thumbs out, bell ringing. Saturday 08:10: Declares the day 'a lot', to applause.
Keep announcements calm, stand one arm's length back, and do not answer her with 'Really?'
