James McAvoy has taken a job counting vehicles at a roundabout outside a Brussels hotel conference centre. He sits on a folding chair with a clicker, an umbrella and a clipboard. Every passing car is logged under one of twenty-three personality columns, each with its own accent.
He is currently producing a full count of cars, vans and lorries between 7am and 7pm. It is going badly, because he presses two fingers to his temple whenever a bus slows, and the bus then stops. A woman named Ingrid has twice been asked to wait while he finishes a sentence.
Monday, 07:00: starts count, doubles it by 07:20 in a different accent. Tuesday, 11:15: a delivery of parcels arrives, which he carries across the road under the umbrella. Thursday, 16:30: the tally reaches 4,112 and a small faun-shaped gap appears in the traffic. Saturday, 09:00: asks for a second clicker.
Give way to any van that appears to be thinking about it.
