Mr Washington is currently a rumour circulating at a village bowls club. It began when Brenda said she had heard he was coming to the Thursday league, and by the tea interval he had become taller and was thought to be bringing his own jack.

The rumour is booked for the summer season. It will appear at the Thursday friendly on the 12th, the Saturday pairs on the 21st, and a Sunday raffle where it is expected to be misattributed to the vicar. Tickets are not required, only a lowered voice.

He is working on becoming a more convincing rumour. Progress is steady: by Friday three members swore he had stood silently at the edge of the rink, then delivered a speech about the draw, and left. The treasurer has asked him to keep the stare down.

Guidance for the public

If the rumour is mentioned, nod slowly and ask who told you.
