Cyndi Lauper is fine, but the fun she is known for has soaked into the contour lines of one laminated map of Coney Island. The hills now rise in the rhythm of the chorus, and the 15-metre line wiggles in orange. She is standing on the key, politely asking for it back.
Walkers using the map report that every slope now comes with a whoop, and the steepest gradient hiccups in the middle. A rambling club has swapped compasses for tambourines. The map kiosk has stopped selling the sheet and now hires it out by the hour for parties.
Cyndi is working through the legend with a pencil, tracing each line back to a verse, and has recovered two choruses and a bridge. The remaining contours resist, preferring to dance in pairs. She expects to finish by the next print run, colour permitting.
Do not trust the hills on this map; they will want to dance.
