The lighthouse was moved 200 miles inland overnight and now stands between a diner and a field of sunflowers. He carries on from the lamp room, which has been fitted with a table so long the salt must be posted. The diner's night cook brings coffee to the near end.
He is currently running a phone-in from the lantern gallery, taking questions in the order the beam passes them. It is going steadily: four hours in, he has answered eleven hundred callers, mostly about the lighthouse. The judo mats on the second landing remain in daily use.
The public keep asking where the sea has gone. He says it is being looked into. They also ask whether the table can be shortened, and the answer is no, though a guest may now sit anywhere along the first forty metres.
Do not ask the lighthouse for directions to the coast; it has already been asked.
