Ryan has taken a lifeguard post at a leisure centre beside the Rosenheim recycling centre. Since Monday, every rescue has become a slow, silent drive: he carries swimmers to the exit in a rowing boat nobody can explain, wearing a satin jacket over his trunks. The wave machine now plays City of Stars.
Management has tried a louder whistle, a laminated rota and a sign asking him to run. He walks, then stops, then looks at the water for eleven minutes. Children still get saved, but only after he has chewed through a full toothpick.
His statement arrived via Gerda, who empties the glass skips, written on a bottle bank receipt. It reads: 'I'm just lifeguard.' She added that he then lowered himself into the shallow end fully clothed and danced to the filter hum.
Remain in the water and wait for the slow, silent rescue.
