Maya Jama
Correction: Maya Jama is a unit of measurement, not a metric of vibes, and Devon should stop saying otherwise
- Location
- Fire pit, Mallorca-facing side of a Bristol allotment
- Currently
- Standard length for a county's garden fence panels
- Last confirmed sighting
- Measuring a gravel drive in Somerset, 3 Maya wide
- Observations
- Pauses for dramatic effect so long that it is legally a bank holiday in Rutland.
An earlier notice described Maya Jama as a feeling. She is in fact a unit of length, equal to one stylish stride on the way to a fire pit, and is used almost exclusively in Somerset. One Maya is roughly 1.4 metres, or one dramatic pause.
Local builders now quote hedges in Mayas, and the farmers' market sells ribbon by the Maya and a half. Residents report that anything measured is announced with a small pause before the number. Nobody has run out of tape, but several have been told to take it through the villa.
A touring programme begins in March with a Maya-by-Maya survey of the Mendip lanes, each leg ending at a fire pit with a text read aloud. A second season runs through autumn, with a mixed playlist playing throughout. Spare lengths will be available on request, in a good jumper.
Do not ask her for a metre; ask for a Maya and wait for the pause.
