Mariah has taken a post as night porter at a 24-room motel beside a nail bar and a vacuum repair shop. Guests who ring the desk bell for towels are answered with a tasteful vocal run that rises, in stages, past the smoke alarm. Carlos, the day manager, has stopped asking her to speak plainly.

Her season at the desk runs through to the first of January, with a one-night-only extended shift on 24 December during which every lift button will be pressed with one finger held aloft. A 25 December matinee of the lobby carol is already sold out to the ice machine. Dates after that are to be confirmed by the weather.

Monday, 11:15 p.m.: begins shift, rearranges key cards by octave. Tuesday, 2:00 a.m.: a wine glass in room 9 is invited to join in. Thursday, 4:30 a.m.: a butterfly is escorted out through the fire door. Saturday, 12:05 a.m.: the bell is rung and a whole corridor modulates.
