The gentleman has taken a Thursday evening bingo job at a village hall beside a campsite in the Dordogne. He wears a double-breasted suit and wellies, and gives each number a small wave. Caravanners queue from half past five, carrying folding chairs and flasks.
He is currently trying to introduce an organic number set grown without pesticides, which has so far produced a 'Duchy Original 47'. Between calls he talks to the potted geraniums and opens each new book of tickets with a plaque. The game now runs to four hours and nobody has complained.
The local council has received eleven compliments about the hedges around the hall, which are now laid to a professional standard. It has also received six complaints that the prize bottle of wine is unveiled with a curtain and a speech. One resident asks that the watercolours of the winning numbers stop being posted through letterboxes.
Bring a pencil, a flask and a respectful tone to the hall on Thursdays.
