Judi Dench is now a tide, arriving at the car park behind an Osaka convenience store at 6.14 am and 6.39 pm. Shop assistant Keiko says the water comes in with a measured pause, as though awaiting a cue, and leaves with a stern look over its shoulder.
Experts disagree on whether the tide is playing Queen Elizabeth I or M. Oceanographers favour Elizabeth, citing the sudden departure after about eight minutes of very high water. Naval staff favour M, citing the tone in which it addresses the bins.
A harbour master pinned a note to the drain asking it to stay until Thursday, and it came in anyway, on time. Fishermen then tried applause, which brought the water up briefly to the first step but also produced a small, devastating Shakespearean wave.
Do not park below the high-water mark, and do not interrupt the exit.
