He is now a crossword clue in a regional newspaper, printed daily beside a Belfast high street in light rain. The clue reads 'Glittering pianist, five letters, begins with a sequin'. Nobody has found an answer that fits the squares.
Monday, 8.10am: the clue appears with a blank grid. Tuesday, 11.40am: a retired schoolteacher offers ROCKET and is told it is the wrong length. Thursday, 3pm: he is moved to 14 across, where he plays Tiny Dancer in the margin. Saturday, 9am: a bin lorry driver tries CROCODILE.
Solvers have tried every spelling of Rocket, Tiny, and Dancer, plus three anagrams of spectacles. A thesaurus was consulted for 'flamboyant', and it suggested a feather boa. None of these fit, because the grid keeps adding a piano to the count.
Do not offer answers. Leave pencils on the windowsill and hum quietly.
